How to Add a Gallery Wall to Your Interior Design

Adding a gallery wall to your home decor is a great way to transform a room. It's not hard to see why the gallery wall continues to go in and out of (but mostly in) style. They infuse pattern, color, and your unique sense of style into any room.

A great gallery wall can be just photos or art, but it can also be more than that. The possibilities are endless. Here are a few tips to make a stunning gallery wall.

1) Make It Personal

This is your space, so use personal items and art that means something you. This will make your gallery wall stand out. Combining family photos with art that you have purchased is a great way to make it unique.

2) Choose a Theme

Displays that revolve around a central theme always look more put together than those that don't. Your display can be built around frame color, image palette, or style, depending on your preference. Keep in mind that if the rest of your decor has lots of textures and patterns, to keep the colors on your wall to a single hue, with a splash of color that picks up a color in your room.

If you are using artwork in a variety of styles and themes, use frames of a similar design or color to tie the collection together.

3) Add Something Unexpected

To make your gallery wall really stand out, add something unexpected. Mirrors are a fresh way to liven up a gallery wall. Choose a large mirror with a pretty frame or unusual shape as the focal point of your display. Or mix a few smaller ones in here and there for a subtle update to the look.

4) Choose Your Layout

There are several different types of layouts for gallery walls, and which one you choose can depend on the space you have and the art you wish to display. A grid is perfect for photographs of the same size. It's a little more formal and less free-form than other layouts.

If you have a smaller space, a column layout will work well. Choose photographs that you think look good together, their sizes and subject matter don't have to match. Avoid hanging the largest on the top, and mix up the sizes for a more casual feel.

A salon style wall requires a collection of framed and unframed photographs, art, and other mementos. This layout is perfect for a large space that stands on its own, such as a nook or hallway. Then there is the classic: a collection of prints, art, or photos in slightly different shapes and sizes. This layout works well in defined spaces.

5) Plan Your Layout

Before you hang anything on the wall, plan your layout. Place the art on the floor and cut newspaper shapes for each piece. Position the paper shapes on the wall with masking tape. This gives you a chance to rearrange your layout until it is exactly as you want it without hanging and re-hanging pieces.
